Meeting Key Questions

  • 1) What are the morphological and physical properties of the IGM/CGM from parsec to Megaparsec scales?
  • 2) How were metals distributed and spread in the IGM/CGM and what does this tell us about intergalactic gas-galaxy interactions?
  • 3) What determines the thermal and ionisation state of intergalactic/circumgalactic gas (hydrogen, helium, metals and molecules)?

Meeting Format

The workshop includes talks, plenary discussion sessions and group discussions. For logistic reasons, the number of participants is limited to 80. In addition to the talks by the invited speakers (see below), there are open presentation slots for junior researchers (current PhD students and early-career postdocs) selected by the SOC. Abstract submission for junior researchers is now closed.

Venue

The conference and accommodation will be located in the Abbazia di Spineto, an 11th century abbey and surrounding buildings. The 2000 acre estate is located near Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO world heritage site. Lunches and dinner will be provided as part of the cost.

Additional Information

  • Traveling to the conference venue:
  • The closest airports, in order of distance, are Florence (150km), Pisa (~200km) and Rome International Airport (~200km). We have organised a bus that will depart on Sunday from Pisa airport at 2.30pm and from Florence Airport at 4pm and will bring participants directly to the venue (arrival at 6pm). Exact time may be adjusted depending on the arrival time of the majority of participants. If your flight arrives too early or too late, we recommend, from Florence airport, to take a taxi to the main station (Firenze Santa Maria Novella) and take a train to “Chiusi-Chianciano Terme” station (~1.30 to 2 hours, there are several direct trains per day). From there, a van from the Abbey will bring people to the conference venue. Train schedules are available here: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html. Alternatively, there are also train connections from Rome international airport (Fiumicino Aeroporto) to Chiusi-Chianciano (2h-3h, with a change in Rome main station or Rome Tiburtina). The meeting will start with a reception on Sunday night and will finish at Friday lunch-time. A bus will leave from the venue at ~2.30pm and arrive at Florence Airport (or city center, if preferred) at ~4.30pm.
